our story
Robyn and I met in 1984 at the start of my senior year at Cornell. I'd grown up in New Jersey and she was from south Louisiana. It was an improbable meeting, but the Lord knew what He was doing. We started dating at Thanksgiving and were engaged by February. My proposal will go down as one of the least romantic events of all time. After a Bible study at my fraternity, I proposed in the front seat of my Firebird by saying, "I don't have a ring, but will you marry me?" Somehow, she said, "yes" and we were married four months later in June of 1985.
Almost two years into marriage and with one young daughter, Robyn informed me that I was not doing a very good job as her husband. She was right. I don't remember being angry or defensive, so she must have been very diplomatic in how she approached me. It was that day I decided I would make it my goal to become the very best husband I could possibly be.
We have three daughters, one son and five grandchildren with one on the way. We also have another grandson in heaven.
Like most couples, we've faced numerous trials in our forty years of marriage. There have been many financial challenges and setbacks. There have been difficult work situations and lay offs. I have battled lengthy seasons of being angry and deeply discouraged. There have have been health challenges, including Robyn's battle with leukemia in 2018.
I wish I could say it was our last encounter with leukemia, but in 2021, our 19-month old grandson became very ill and was diagnosed with a very rare and difficult-to-treat form of leukemia. After months of chemotherapy and countless trips to the hospital Will had a bone marrow transplant in the summer of 2022. Unfortunately, it failed and Will passed away in early 2023.
The disappointments and pain are real, but the Lord has been good, faithful and generous to us through every challenge we've faced. And He continues to grow our intimacy with Him and with each other. Everything Robyn and I do and teach flows from our relationship with Christ and the strength of our marriage.
Currently, I have the privilege of serving sixteen companies as their chaplain. Robyn serves as the Associate Regional Director for Young Life in the state of Arkansas. We are passionate about walking with the Lord, enjoying a great marriage and helping others experience the same thing by believing God and getting connected to His Word on a daily basis.
